How is the Danish educational system structured when it comes to foreign nationals who want to study in Denmark? And is there a difference whether it's EU or non-EU citizens applying for education? In this post, we'll enlighten you on whether it's free for you to study in Denmark, how to apply for admission, and whether you'll have access to SU (State Educational Support).
Is Education Free in Denmark for International Students?
If you come from the Nordic countries or an EU/EEA country, you can freely apply for education in Denmark. If you are from the Nordics, it is not necessary to apply for a residence permit - as a student, you can freely enter and exit Denmark. If you are a citizen from an EU/EEA country, you have the right to study and work in Denmark. However, you must apply for a residence permit if your studies last longer than 3 months.
When you apply for education, the individual educational institution assesses whether you meet the requirements and are suitable for admission - just as it does for Danish citizens.
International Students from Outside the EU/EEA
If you wish to study in Denmark and come from outside the EU/EEA, different rules apply. First and foremost, you must apply for a residence permit before you can start studying in Denmark. Then, there are different rules for residence permits depending on the type of education you want to start. Learn more about the rules on the Danish Immigration Service's website here.
You must finance your education in Denmark yourself, as you are not covered under EU rules. However, there is an opportunity to apply for SU if you meet a series of requirements. Learn more at su.dk.
How Can I Study for Free in Denmark?
If you come from an EU/EEA country, studying in Denmark is free. You might have heard of the Danish Education Support (SU), which is granted to Danish citizens during their education. SU is reserved for Danish citizens, but according to the EU, it is possible for international citizens to receive the support just like the Danes. To get Danish SU, however, you must meet a series of requirements, including longer periods of work or permanent residence in Denmark.
To apply for SU, you must fill out a special application form that applies to foreign citizens. The whole process takes place in MinSU, where you will find a separate application form. It takes about 2-4 weeks to process your application. Learn more here about how to apply for SU.
Students from the Nordic countries can bring their SU from their home country to Denmark without having to pay Danish tax.
