Education and Job Getting Started with an Education in Denmark

Are you looking to start an education in Denmark? As an international newcomer, the Danish education system may seem more remote than what you are accustomed to back home. Now, you need to figure out how it all works. How do you determine what you want to study? And where can you find an overview of the available educational programs? Read on to become more knowledgeable about how to apply for an education and start studying in Denmark.

What do you want to study?

First and foremost, you need to decide which direction you want to take. Most people have a sense of whether they want to work with natural sciences, health, humanities, technology, or more practical subjects.

Perhaps you already have an undergraduate degree from your home country and wish to enhance your skills and employment prospects in Danish society. Regardless, it involves brainstorming and possibly using various guides freely available online.

One such resource is UddannelsesGuiden (the Education Guide), a comprehensive portal that includes everything from different educational programs in Denmark, inspiration, and guidance on how to choose the right course of study. For example, with Studievælgeren (the Study Selector), you can answer a series of questions and receive inspiration for potential programs that match your interests and dreams.

Where do you find an educational institution?

Once you have figured out which direction you want to take, it's time to explore where the nearest educational institutions are located. There are excellent opportunities for education in Denmark, and therefore, institutions are located throughout the country. This includes everything from universities, business academies, and professional colleges to vocational education, maritime, and artistic institutions.

Here you can find an overview of higher education institutions in Denmark.

You can always visit a student advisor at the educational institution and get guidance on whether the program is right for you. If you prefer to be guided online, this is also an option and a much more flexible solution if you live far from your potential future educational institution.

How to apply for admission to an education

Once you have decided on the direction you want to take, the next step is to apply for your dream education. This is done on optagelse.dk, an official website managed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science.

Be aware of the applicable application deadlines for both quota 1 and quota 2. If you do not have a Danish high school diploma, you must apply through quota 2, where there are a series of admission rules, e.g., submitting a motivated application and/or having tests, exams, and interviews.
